Are Pomsky Hypoallergenic: The Common Myth

First things first, who are Pomskys and what does hypoallergenic mean? Pomskies are hybrid dogs who come from the adorable Pomeranians and the mighty Huskies. Coming to the other question, hypoallergenic means that this dog would not cause an allergic reaction to those who are allergic to dogs. You may have heard that the Pomskies are hypoallergenic, but are they really? This is the question that we will tackle in this article.

If you go to a breeder or a kennel club, you will find yourself hearing this word a little too often, mostly about this breed as well as many others. But the fact of the matter is that all dogs shed, even those that are low shedders or those who are hairless. Such dogs might not affect those with allergies as much as others, but it would be wrong to say that they do not affect at all.

The main issue here is that people feel that those who are allergic to dogs are allergic to their hair. This is not the case, the allergy can also be caused by the dog’s saliva, urine or even their dander. The allergy is person specific, so an individual who is allergic might be able to live happily with a heavy shedding dog with a little care.

Similarly, those who are allergic to a dog’s dander might need to take additional care like regular brushing and bathing weekly. Even for those who have a mild allergy, they can comfortably live with the dog if they vacuum daily and use high-grade air filters to ensure that the dander and hair levels are minimum.

Now, back to the Pomskies, their coat is thick and double covered. They shed their undercoat completely each year, so those with allergies who do not wish to vacuum so regularly would find their allergies coming to the fore. This shedding period would mean coming across tufts of hair and dander.

So, we can say that Pomskies are not Hypoallergenic. It is just a myth. While those with mild allergies can live with the dog, those with acute allergies should best stay away.
